Swearing-in of the Swiss Guards

Swearing-in of the Swiss Guards
Vatican, May 6, 2004

Professor Carl A. Anderson, invited by Commander Captain Mr. Lemar Theodor Mader, assisted the swearing-in of the Swiss Guards. During the ceremony, which every year is held on the same date as the Sack of Rome, the new recruits, in dress uniforms, swear their solemn loyalty to the Holy Father. This is an extremely impressive ceremony for both the environment where it is held, the San Damaso Courtyard in the Vatican, and also for the large audience, made up of the highest religious and political authorities, which is present.
