“Splendors of Christmas”“Splendors of Christmas”
November 7 through January 31, 2002

On loan from the Vatican Museums, the exhibition was composed of 27 displays that included paintings, sculptures, triptychs and medallions. Included were 1600 year old sculptured marble images of the Nativity and the Epiphany that had been removed from ancient sarcophagi. Other works were remarkable for the exceptional quality of their miniature carvings. A rosewood and ivory presepe from the Congo contained 34 carvings. Murillo’s large painting of the “Nativity and the Adoration of the Shepherds,” was the centerpiece of the exhibition.
