 | “St. Mary’s Among the Mansions of Hillhouse Avenue” July 15, 2002 through March 1, 2004
A walk-back in time to America’s post Civil War era and to New Haven’s most prestigious avenue, was accomplished by using 47 period photographs on loan from the Yale University Library. Exclusive Hillhouse Avenue contained the mansions and estates of New Haven’s most privileged Protestants. The construction of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in 1874, across the splendid avenue from railroad tycoon Joseph Earl Sheffield’s magnificent estate was considered a scandal by the residents. It was at St. Mary’s in 1882 that Father Michael J. McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus. |
