 | “Creating St. Peter’s” December 10 through August 31, 2004
The largest temporary exhibition yet installed at the museum, “Creating St. Peter’s” recounts the remarkable story of the design, construction, restoration and historical significance of St. Peter’s Basilica, as well as its ancient predecessor. The 440-year-old centerpiece is Michelangelo’s magnificent 16.5-foot tall dome model. It was built to show the pope what the actual dome would look like. The model also functioned as an engineering study to explore remediation of stress on the completed dome. A total of 140 items are displayed in four main exhibition galleries including: original paintings, models, sculptures, engravings, documents, drawings, photographs and tools. “Inside the Vatican,” a 90 minute feature film, is being shown in the theatre. |
